Andy Goldsworthy Assignment

This is a giant flower I made for the Andy Goldsworthy assignment. I chose to make it under my tree house because it was a windy day and it's kinda sheltered there. It's made out of rocks, oak leaves, dandelions, and a white flower that I don't know the name of. I should look it up. My plan was to make the petals out of a bunch of white flowers like the one in the middle, but I couldn't find enough. So I went with the nearest convenient item to finish the flower (oak leaves). It's about 3 feet in diameter.

Portrait Photography

Well, this was my first attempt at portrait photography. These pictures were chosen because they were less blurry than all the other ones. My subjects were too squirmy. :P I tried to blur out the backgrounds, but it didn't work out well.

Landscape Photography

These are my landscape shots, all of the same scene but using different settings and slightly different angles. I couldn't get angles that were too different, because I can't exactly walk around the mountain, so I tried taking pictures from further away, from about 50 feet to the right or left, and using different levels of zoom.

Night Photography

1. Nature Scene

2. Architecture Scene

3. Long Exposure

4. Monochromatic Shot

5. Night Photography Shot
(Subject, Effect, and Camera Set Up of My Choosing)

I had a lot of fun taking these, though it was hard to get the right amount of light. The main thing I changed was the shutter speed, I didn't want to mess with the ISO. I think the third and fifth pictures were the funnest to take. The third one was a picture of a campfire next to a pond with a long exposure. I don't know what the light source was in the fifth one, I guess the sun was still fading at 9 pm, but I only saw it through the camera.

Cubomania Project

Before:

After:

This (the 'After' image) is an example of Cubomania. It's not exactly as pretty as the Before image, but I suppose it's got its own interesting look. I could have been a bit more careful when I was rearranging the pieces, to avoid those little white lines, but being the impatient person I am, I rushed through it as fast as I could for no particular reason. I definitely favor the original. Perhaps if I'd been more patient...no, I'm pretty sure I'm incapable of patience. That's probably not a good trait for a photographer to have.

Food Photography

For this assignment, I decided to take pictures of an apple lightbox. some of them didn't turn out as well as I thought, so these are my best. I think I should've chosen a subject that was less reflective, as you can see the sides of the lightbox reflected off of the apple's skin in some pictures. I didn't have time for post-editing either. Some of them turned out a little too dark, except for the bottom two, because I used flash with those.

Studio Light Box Photos

These pictures are my favorite because they looked the best. I only edited one, but I should have edited the two at the top also, because you can see the lines of the overlapping papers. I also should have used a light on the top, but I couldn't find another one, so I just did lights for the sides. The light-box was fun to make, and I had fun taking the pictures too.

Creepy Shadows

I think these are the best ones I took because they are the clearest. And, of course, the creepiest. I loved taking the third one, with the shadow of the camera and tripod. I'll be perfectly honest, i wasn't really thinking about 'evoking feelings' when I was taking these pictures, I was mostly thinking about what my grade would be like if I didn't get these pictures taken and turned in. But now that I review them, they do evoke some feelings.

Bonus Pictures

(That third picture was my first attempt, I kept moving the camera on accident, so it made weird shapes with the lights)

Home

This is my home. It's muddy and cold in the winter, hot and dry in the summer, and there never seems to be enough room inside. But it's also where my family is, and that's all that really matters.

Rules of Composition

1. Rule of Thirds

This picture is a good example of the Rule of Thirds because, if you were to drew a tic-tac-toe board on it, the old cabin would be positioned over the lower right intersection.

2. Simplicity/Emphasis

In this picture, the subject (the dead leaf near the center) is positioned in front of a simple background (the clouds).

3. Leading Lines

The fence in this picture leads your eyes to the horses. At least, it's supposed to...I was kinda too far away from the horses.

4. Balance

To me, Balance pretty much means symmetry. So here is a mostly symmetrical picture.

5. Framing

In this picture, everything is framed by this pavilion. I probably should've cropped out the picnic tables, though.

6. Avoiding Mergers

If you look closely, the two horses look like one horse with six legs. This is a merger.

7. Perspective or Point of View

If you're wondering why the wooden post on the left side of the image looks like it's been cut in half, it's because I took this picture looking into a mirror which, for some reason, was hanging on a brick wall. The whole post didn't fit into the mirror.

8. Harmony

Maybe this is a better example of rhythm/repetition, but I thought it would make example of harmony because the icicles are all part of the same chunk of ice hanging off our roof, they're all attached to each other.

9. Rhythm/Repetition

There are two examples of rhythm/repetition in this picture: the ridges on the wall and the wood planks on the ceiling.

Bad Photos

1. Motion Blur

2. Merger

3. Out of Focus

4. Overexposed

5. Underexposed

Bad photos can still be artistic. I mean these ones aren't really artistic, but other bad photos could be artistic. Mrs. Webb's bowling alley, for example, was blurred and out of focus, but very colorful and cool-looking. All of the colors looked really good out of focus, so to me at least, it was still artistic. So bad photos can still be artistic in their own way.
